Southeastern Louisiana University is a public university funded by the State in Hammond, Louisiana. It was founded in 1925 by Linus A. Sims, the principal of Hammond High School, as Hammond Junior College, located in a wing of the school. Sims has managed to get the campus moved to north Hammond in 1928 when it became known as Southeastern Louisiana College. He received university status in 1970. There are approximately 15,000 students representing 43 states and 66 countries have registered.
During the 1990s, Southeast was the fastest growing college in the United States, despite the presence of Louisiana State University (LSU's flagship system) just 45 miles (72 km) west along Hammond Interstate 12 in the State Capital in Baton Rouge, and the presence of many universities miles (89 km) southeast of New Orleans. southeast of 55 are colored green and gold, and the nickname is the Lions.sports teams from South East to participate in NCAA Division I (Football FCS) in the Southland Conference. Southeastern Louisiana University began as a grassroots movement by the people of Hammond and its environs, which have recognized the need for an institution of higher education.
