The PCAT(or Pharmacy College Admissions Test) is a standardized test which used by most pharmacy schools when making admissions decisions. PCAT is designed to test applicants’ ability to study in courses usually required in pharmacy school.

Student’s high score shows a great commitment to the field, and also validates the rest of the application. You should keep in mind that a high score probably won’t save an applicant if the admissions committee doesn’t believe that the student has a sincere interest in a pharmacy career, or if they do poorly in the rest of the application.

Six sections in the PCAT

• Verbal Ability
• Writing
• Reading Comprehension
• Biology (general biology, microbiology, and human anatomy and physiology
• Quantitative Ability (basic math, algebra, probability and statistics, precalculus, and calculus)
• Chemistry (both inorganic and organic chemistry)

There is a huge industry in test preparation, just like with the SAT exams taken in high school. Students can choose from a myriad of PCAT specific test preparation books and courses. Well known test companies such as Kaplan have a book and course to sell to any motivated student.

Students should have recently completed all prerequisite courses required to get into pharmacy school, before doing any preparation for the exam. It is difficult and time consuming to prepare for the PCAT without recent mastery of the subjects being tested on the exam.

PCAT is offered four times a year in June, August, October, and January. After the junior year of college, most students take the June or August test administration, which both allow for the October testing date if initial test results are not satisfactory. Many schools will not accept results from the January test date because it is too late into the pharmacy school admissions process. This means all prerequisite courses need to be completed by the end of the junior year.

PCAT Sample Questions

1. The major process by which the kidney removes waste products from the blood is called

a. tubular secretion.
b. tubular reabsorption.
c. glomerular filtration.
d. tubular sublimation.

2. Which of the following is described as the “power house of the cell?”

a. Endoplasmic reticulum
b. Ribosomes
c. Mitochondria
d. Vacuoles

3. Which of the following provides the necessary freedom for bones as well as protect joints from external injury and bones from dislocation?

a. Cartilage
b. Ligaments
c. Tendons
d. Muscles

4. Pick out the nonsynthetic fiber:
a. cellulose
a. rayon
c. orlon
d. nylon

5. Which of the following nitrogen bases is present in RNA but absent in DNA?

a. Cytosine

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations is the agency of the American Dental Association that is responsible for the conduct of the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination program. The purpose of this program is to provide state boards with information on the qualifications of individuals who seek licensure to practice dental hygiene.

To achieve purpose, the content of the Dental Hygiene Examination has been formulated to evaluate the licensure candidates’ theoretical and applied knowledge in the basic biomedical, behavioral, dental, and dental hygiene sciences, as well as in community health and research principles.

The NBDE(National Board Dental Examination) examination is required in order to get licensure in United States or Canada or to advance the studies in any of the specialities after completing Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine. Foreign-trained dentists also have to take this test in order to get admission in one of the Advanced Standing programs in any US dental school.

The purpose of the examination is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dentists who seek licensure to practice dentistry. The examination assesses the ability to understand important information from basic biomedical and dental sciences and also the ability to apply such information in a problem-solving context.

Association of American Medical Colleges states that “ The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee’s problem solving, critical thinking, writing skills, and knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Scores are reported in Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. Medical colleges consider MCAT exam scores as part of their admission process.”

It’s well-known fact that almost all of US medical schools require applicants to submit scores of test- MCAT exam. It’s important that many schools don’t accept MCAT exam scores that are more than three years old.

You should be prepared to provide personal identification in the form of a current valid government-issued ID containing an expiration date, your photo, and signature (e.g., driver’s license or passport) in which the name matches that of your registration exactly. The Test Center Administrator will admit only those examinees who can be positively identified through qualifying forms of identification.

The Association of American Medical Colleges, which handles MCAT administration, zealously guards the contents of the test. The Association has released some practice tests and sample questions, but test takers are not allowed to disclose the contents of the tests they take. Study guides and classes to help people prepare for the MCAT exam, therefore, must rely on familiarizing test takers with the kind of content they will be expected to know, rather than providing people with actual questions from real MCAT exams.

The Medical College Admissions Test includes four sections, which taken over the course of around five hours. Students have to answer multiple choice questions in verbal reasoning, biological sciences, and physical sciences, and they complete writing samples for the fourth section. The MCAT exam is administered on a computer in a testing center, with most testing centers offering numerous available dates for students to choose from if they want to take the test.

The multiple choice sections are scored from 1 to 15, while the writing sample is scored from J to T. Scores take several weeks to report, and students can request rescoring if they feel that the scores are erroneous.

Test takers also have the right to void the exam on the day of the test. People may opt to void if they feel that they have not performed adequately on the exam and they do not want their tests scored and reported.

The USMLE(United States Medical Licensing Examination) is a multi-part professional exam sponsored by the FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards) and the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners). Before being permitted to practice medicine in the United States of America medical doctors with an M.D. degree are required to pass this examination.

The USMLE assesses a physician’s ability to apply knowledge, principles, and concepts, and to determine fundamental patient-centered skills that are important in disease and health and that constitute the basis of effective and safe patient care. Examination committees composed of medical educators and clinicians from across the United States and its territories prepare the examination materials each year.

Students and graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical school programs accredited by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education), leading to the M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree, or by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association), leading to the D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree, register for Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE with the NBME.

Students and graduates of medical schools outside the Canada or United States register for Step 1 and Step 2 with the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). Graduates of medical schools in and outside the United States and Canada register for Step 3 with the FSMB or with a medical licensing authority in the United States. Each of the three steps of the USMLE examination complements the other; no step stands alone in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure. The USMLE program recommends that for Step 3 eligibility, licensure authorities require the completion, or near completion, of at least one postgraduate training year in a program of graduate medical education accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education) or the AOA (American Osteopathic Association).

National Council of State Boards of Nursing states that the NCLEX (National Council Licensure EXamination) covers the enumerated “categories of client needs”:

• Safe, Effective Care Environment
- Management of Care
- Safety and Infection Control
• Health Promotion and Maintenance
- Growth and Development Through the Life Span
- Prevention and Early Detection of Disease
• Physiological Integrity
- Basic Care and Comfort
- Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies
- Reduction of Risk Potential
- Physiological Adaptation
• Psychosocial Integrity
- Coping and Adaptation
- Psychosocial Adaptation

If you want to take the NCLEX exam, you have to apply for nursing license from your state board of nursing. Your board will evaluate whether or not you meet its criteria for NCLEX examination. If you are credible, then you must register to take the exam.

You will receive an NCLEX Examination Candidate Bulletin in the mail after you have applied for a license from your state board of nursing. Then You may register with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s testing service by phone, or by filling out a mail-in registration form. After your state board of nursing has verified your eligibility to take the NCLEX exam, you will receive an ATT(Authorization to Take the Test). It will come along with a list of testing centers and instructions for how to schedule an appointment to take the examination.

The NCLEX exam is a quite difficult multiple choice exam which uses an interactive system called CAT (Computerized Adaptive Testing) to gauge your level of competence.Registered nurses candidates will answer a minimum of seventy five questions, LPN candidates a minimum of eighty five questions. After you have answered the minimum number of questions, the computer will attempt to access your level of competence.

You will have five hours in which to complete the exam. This includes the time set aside for the introductory computer tutorial and for two 10-minute breaks. The NCLEX examination is scored once by the computer on which you are taking it, and a second time by the National Council’s testing service. It will take about a month for your state board of nursing to mail you the results of your exam.

If you fail the test, your state board of nursing will mail you a diagnostic profile that will outline both the areas of knowledge in which your performance was satisfactory and the areas in which it was not.

Of course, you can retake the test as many times as you need to. But The National Council’s policy states that you have to wait at least 91 days before retaking the test. Individual state boards may impose other, stricter requirements.
